SUMMARY:World Diabetes Day
DESCRIPTION:Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes. You can get diabetic retinopathy if you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes. \n\n\n\nIt is caused by high blood glucose levels damaging the back of the eye (retina). It can cause vision loss if it is not diagnosed and treated. \n\n\n\nAround 1 in 20 people with diabetes are at risk of vision loss due to diabetic retinopathy. \n\n\n\nWho diabetic retina screening is for\n\n\n\nThe Diabetic RetinaScreen programme is for people in Ireland with type 1 and type 2 diabetes\, age 12 years and older. \n\n\n\nThe screening programme is free of charge for everyone with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. \n\n\n\nWhy get diabetic retina screening\n\n\n\nScreening is a way of finding any changes to the small blood vessels in the lining of the retina. Screening can find and treat retinopathy early. It involves having a photo taken of your eyes with a digital camera. \n\n\n\nWhen retinopathy is caught early\, treatment is effective at reducing or preventing damage to your sight. \n\n\n\nThe longer you have had diabetes\, the more likely you are to develop diabetic retinopathy. \n\n\n\nWhen screening takes place\n\n\n\nFor most people\, diabetic retina screening is once a year. \n\n\n\nIf you have had no retinopathy in your last 2 screenings\, your next screening will be in 2 years’ time. \n\n\n\nDigital surveillance eye screening is where your eyes are monitored more than once a year\, but you do not need treatment.

SUMMARY:Universal Children’s Day
DESCRIPTION:World Children’s Day was first established in 1954 as Universal Children’s Day and is celebrated on 20 November each year to promote international togetherness\, awareness among children worldwide\, and improving children’s welfare. \n\n\n\nNovember 20th is an important date as it is the date in 1959 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. It is also the date in 1989 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child. \n\n\n\nSince 1990\, World Children’s Day also marks the anniversary of the date that the UN General Assembly adopted both the Declaration and the Convention on children’s rights. \n\n\n\nMothers and fathers\, teachers\, nurses and doctors\, government leaders and civil society activists\, religious and community elders\, corporate moguls and media professionals\, as well as young people and children themselves\, can play an important part in making World Children’s Day relevant for their societies\, communities and nations. \n\n\n\nWorld Children’s Day offers each of us an inspirational entry-point to advocate\, promote and celebrate children’s rights\, translating into dialogues and actions that will build a better world for children.

SUMMARY:International day of elimination of violence against women
DESCRIPTION:Violence against women and girls remains one of the most prevalent and pervasive human rights violations in the world. Globally\, almost one in three women have been subjected to physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence\, non-partner sexual violence\, or both\, at least once in their life. \n\n\n\nFor at least 51\,100 women in 2023\, the cycle of gender-based violence ended with one final and brutal act—their murder by partners and family members. That means a woman was killed every 10 minutes. \n\n\n\nThis scourge has intensified in different settings\, including the workplace and online spaces\, and has been exacerbated by conflicts\, and climate change. \n\n\n\nThe solution lies in robust responses\, holding perpetrators accountable\, and accelerating action through well-resourced national strategies and increased funding to women’s rights movements.
