SUMMARY:Awareness Week on Alcohol Related Harm
DESCRIPTION:“A glass of alcohol won’t kill you but a law can save thousands of lives” \n\n\n\nIn Europe\, every minute\, policy makers have an opportunity to save lives by addressing the high levels of alcohol consumption that uniquely affect our region. Millions of people suffer from health issues\, violence\, injuries\, job losses\, and various other harms. \n\n\n\nThe Awareness Week on Alcohol Related Harm 2023 (AWARH23) is set to capture the attention of policy makers\, bringing to light the critical issue of alcohol-related harm in Europe. Starting on Monday\, November 27th\, this campaign aims to create a positive change. \n\n\n\nWe encourage policy makers to listen to the video stories addressed to them\, to follow AWARH23 on social media and to share our cause. \n\n\n\nLet’s ensure that the facts and policy solutions for alcohol harm are heard loudly and clearly\, with the hope of making a positive impact on the lives of many. There is no excuse for not taking action to protect citizens from alcohol-related harm.

SUMMARY:International Day of Persons with Disabilities
DESCRIPTION:The leadership of persons with disabilities is epitomised by the global disability rights movement’s slogan “Nothing About Us Without Us”. It connotes the basic requirements of participation\, representation and inclusion and calls for persons with disabilities to actively shape the conditions of their lives. \n\n\n\nOne of the priorities of the global disability agenda is to advance the agency and leadership of persons with disabilities. In the past decades\, persons with disabilities and organisations of persons with disabilities (OPDs) have already championed for the changes in their communities\, and have been leading many of the community-led initiatives not only to advance their own rights\, and wellbeing but also promoting inclusive development for instance enabling universal access to basic services by all; they have done so by taking both targeted and mainstreaming approaches to disability inclusion through\, among others\, consultation\, data collection and analysis\, and support with advocacy and accountability efforts. \n\n\n\nThe observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2024 (IDPD 2024) takes place against the backdrop of pivotal global developments\, from the Summit of the Future to the upcoming Second World Summit for Social Development. These key global Summits will complement one another in providing a continuous roadmap toward disability-inclusive and sustainable peace and development. By emphasising this complementarity\, the theme chosen for the observance in 2024 aims to underscore the importance of leveraging the leadership of persons with disabilities to ensure disability-inclusive and sustainable peace and development for all. \n\n\n\nThe United Nations Disability Inclusion Strategy\n\n\n\nWhen launching the United Nations Disability Inclusion Strategy in June 2019\, the Secretary-General stated that the United Nations should lead by example and raise the Organization’s standards and performance on disability inclusion—across all pillars of work\, from headquarters to the field.   \n\n\n\nThe United Nations Disability Inclusion Strategy provides the foundation for sustainable and transformative progress on disability inclusion through all pillars of the work of the United Nations. Through the Strategy\, the United Nations system reaffirms that the full and complete realization of the human rights of all persons with disabilities is an inalienable\, integral and indivisible part of all human rights and fundamental freedoms. \n\n\n\nIn 2024\, the Secretary-General submitted his fifth report on disability inclusion in the UN system. It reflects on the progress made to advance disability inclusion\, highlights new or continuing challenges and opportunities presented through the Strategy’s implementation\, and emphasizes key areas of focus needed to continue mobilizing the system towards an inclusive\, accessible and sustainable world for all.

SUMMARY:International Volunteer Day
DESCRIPTION:For the International Volunteer Day 2024\, United Nations Volunteers (UNV) demonstrates its commitment to communities and the wellbeing of UN Volunteers across the globe through concrete community volunteer activities carried out with national and UN system partners. \n\n\n\nIt is simply not possible to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) without including people at all stages\, at all levels\, and at all times. \n\n\n\nVolunteering makes people part of the solutions. Volunteerism lets people and communities participate in their development.  \n\n\n\nThe challenges we face—climate change\, conflicts\, and social injustices can feel overwhelming. Yet\, in these trying moments\, the spirit of volunteerism shines brighter than ever. In every corner of the world\, volunteers are usually the first to respond. They rise to meet challenges with courage\, dedication\, and selflessness. \n\n\n\nVolunteers create a richer culture of service within their communities. They help bridge the gap between generations and support sustainable development.  \n\n\n\nVolunteering allows us to work together across generations to achieve the SDGs. Volunteering is an intergenerational cycle.

SUMMARY:International Migrants Day
DESCRIPTION:International Migrants Day gives us a special opportunity to shine a spotlight on the invaluable contributions of millions of migrants around the world. It’s also a day for us to highlight the increasingly complex environment in which migration occurs. Conflicts\, climate-related disasters and economic pressures continue to drive millions of people from their homes in search of safety or simply opportunity. \n\n\n\nThis past year\, we saw record levels of internal displacement\, rising humanitarian needs across ongoing and new crises\, and\, tragically\, the highest-ever death toll of migrants in transit. Yet\, alongside these challenges\, are stories of resilience\, progress and hope. Where safe and well-managed migration holds extraordinary potential. Migrants play critical roles in labour markets\, filling skills gaps\, driving innovation and entrepreneurship\, and addressing demographic challenges in aging societies. Migrants boost economic growth and provide a lifeline to families and communities back home\, driving development. \n\n\n\nThe evidence is overwhelming that when migration is managed safely and strategically\, it can be a powerful force for good. By supporting regular pathways for migration\, we can enable opportunities for migrants\, better protect their rights\, and contribute to greater prosperity in the countries migrants come from and those that host them. \n\n\n\nTogether\, one step at a time\, we can continue building a world where migration is safe\, orderly\, and beneficial – for everyone.
