SUMMARY:World Diabetes Day
DESCRIPTION:Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes. You can get diabetic retinopathy if you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes. \n\n\n\nIt is caused by high blood glucose levels damaging the back of the eye (retina). It can cause vision loss if it is not diagnosed and treated. \n\n\n\nAround 1 in 20 people with diabetes are at risk of vision loss due to diabetic retinopathy. \n\n\n\nWho diabetic retina screening is for\n\n\n\nThe Diabetic RetinaScreen programme is for people in Ireland with type 1 and type 2 diabetes\, age 12 years and older. \n\n\n\nThe screening programme is free of charge for everyone with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. \n\n\n\nWhy get diabetic retina screening\n\n\n\nScreening is a way of finding any changes to the small blood vessels in the lining of the retina. Screening can find and treat retinopathy early. It involves having a photo taken of your eyes with a digital camera. \n\n\n\nWhen retinopathy is caught early\, treatment is effective at reducing or preventing damage to your sight. \n\n\n\nThe longer you have had diabetes\, the more likely you are to develop diabetic retinopathy. \n\n\n\nWhen screening takes place\n\n\n\nFor most people\, diabetic retina screening is once a year. \n\n\n\nIf you have had no retinopathy in your last 2 screenings\, your next screening will be in 2 years’ time. \n\n\n\nDigital surveillance eye screening is where your eyes are monitored more than once a year\, but you do not need treatment.

SUMMARY:World Stroke Day
DESCRIPTION:World Stroke Day on October 29th 2025 comes just weeks after the 4th UN High-Level Meeting on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) on September 25th — a pivotal moment that will shape the global agenda for NCDs\, including stroke\, for years to come. Keeping stroke at the forefront of these discussions is the focus of the WSO-convened Global Stroke Action Coalition and its Every Minute Counts advocacy campaign. \n\n\n\nThe timing presents an unmissable opportunity to amplify our message. This year\, World Stroke Day will enhance the Every Minute Counts campaign with public-facing messaging focused on helping people everywhere recognize the signs of stroke and the urgent need to #ActFAST. It’s also a chance to mobilize a broader audience to demand government action on the policy recommendations outlined in #StrokeActionNow.

SUMMARY:World Osteoporosis Day
DESCRIPTION:World Osteoporosis Day\, marked on October 20th each year\, is a prime time to put the spotlight on osteoporosis. Below\, read about this year’s campaign theme\, and how you can get involved and support the campaign in a number of ways. \n\n\n\nAbout the 2025 World Osteoporosis Day Campaign\n\n\n\n“It’s Unacceptable!” puts the spotlight on the persistent and preventable crisis in osteoporosis care. \n\n\n\nDespite affecting over 500 million people worldwide\, osteoporosis remains severely underdiagnosed and undertreated—especially among those who have already sustained fragility fractures. Shockingly\, up to 80% of patients with osteoporotic fractures receive no follow-up diagnosis or treatment. The consequences are devastating: chronic pain\, disability\, loss of independence\, increased risk of future fractures\, and premature death. Families\, healthcare systems\, and economies also shoulder the heavy burden of this neglect. \n\n\n\nThe campaign demands an end to the neglect in prevention and care\, and urgent policy action. At a time when effective diagnostic tools\, treatments\, and programmes like Fracture Liaison Services exist\, the continued inaction is indefensible. With aging populations and fracture rates rising\, osteoporosis must be prioritized across all stages of life—from prevention in youth to post-fracture care. “It’s Unacceptable!” calls on the public\, healthcare providers\, and health authorities to close the treatment gap\, dismantle misconceptions\, and make bone health a global priority.

SUMMARY:Spiritual Care Week
DESCRIPTION:Since 1985 \n\n\n\nSpiritual Care Week/Pastoral Care Week is hosted by The COMISS Network: The Network on Ministry in Specialized Settings.  The first Pastoral Care Week was held in October 1985. Since then it has grown beyond national to international proportions. The celebration of Spiritual Care Week provides an opportunity for chaplains and pastoral care counselors\, educators and providers to share their story and to celebrate various ministries. More specifically\, the established objectives of the Spiritual Care Week Committee outline the scope of Spiritual Care Week observance:  \n\n\n\n\nTo celebrate the education for and practice of spiritual care through professional chaplaincy and pastoral counseling.\n\n\n\nTo interpret and promote pastoral care.\n\n\n\nTo honor and celebrate all practitioners of pastoral care.\n\n\n\nTo express appreciation to institutions and their staff who support pastoral care ministries.\n\n\n\nTo publicize the work of pastoral care organizations affiliated with COMISS.\n\n\n\nTo promote continuing education for clergy\, laity\, and institutional employees regarding the value of pastoral care. \n\n\n\n\nEach year a new theme brings to the light a certain aspect of spiritual care as a focus. A new theme invites us to new and creative ways to tell the story of spiritual care.

SUMMARY:World Menopause Day
DESCRIPTION:Menopause affects half the world’s population\, yet the issue remains shrouded in secrecy – including in the workplace. \n\n\n\nIt affects more than one in five members of the global workforce\, yet menopause is often dismissed\, stigmatized and misunderstood\, leaving many women to endure this phase in silence. \n\n\n\nOn this World Menopause Day\, let’s commit to raising our voices to break the silence and strive to build more inclusive and empathetic work environments. \n\n\n\nWhether paid or unpaid\, formal or informal\, women’s labour is a driving force behind the global economy. While symptoms can be managed\, menopause can significantly impact physical and mental health\, well-being and productivity\, making it essential for workplaces to prioritize support for women during this health transition.  \n\n\n\nLeaders\, particularly in male-dominated sectors\, must be educated and prepared to support female employees with empathy\, understanding and flexibility. Supporting women through menopause – which typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55 – is not just a matter of equity; it is a necessity for a functioning\, productive and inclusive society. \n\n\n\nMenopause-friendly workplace policies\, such as flexible working hours\, accessible health resources and a comfortable work environment\, are key to addressing the unique challenges women may face. This kind of support benefits not only women workers\, but also their families\, colleagues and communities\, contributing to better workplace morale and societal health. \n\n\n\nWomen’s well-being at all ages is crucial to the social and financial health of society. It’s time to start the conversation.

SUMMARY:World Hospice and Palliative Care Day
DESCRIPTION:World Hospice and Palliative Care Day is an annual unified day of action to celebrate and support hospice and palliative care around the world. \n\n\n\nWHPCD has been marked every year for the last 20 years. Join us on Saturday 11 October to advocate for better hospice and palliative care services around the world. \n\n\n\nThe theme for 2025 is Achieving the Promise: Universal Access to Palliative Care. This theme builds on last year’s campaign\, where we marked 10 years since the World Health Assembly (WHO’s Governing Body) passed the only stand-alone resolution on palliative care\, calling for all countries to “strengthen palliative care as a component of comprehensive care throughout the life course.” The aim is to achieve this promise.

SUMMARY:World Sight Day
DESCRIPTION:The second Thursday of October is World Sight Day\, an opportunity to highlight the importance of protecting our eyes and vision\, raise awareness of vision impairment and blindness\, and promote eye and vision care. On 10 October 2024\, WHO/Europe draws specific attention to child eye health. Eye health services should be accessible\, available and affordable for all children. \n\n\n\nWhile uncorrected vision impairment may impact education and social inclusion\, simple solutions such as spectacles can make a world of difference. In May 2024\, WHO launched the global SPECS 2030 initiative to ensure access to quality\, affordable spectacles and related people-centred services for everyone who needs them. \n\n\n\nWorld Sight Day is also an opportunity to debunk myths regarding vision and move towards a world where all children are free from social stigma associated with wearing spectacles or other corrective interventions for their eyes and vision.

SUMMARY:Breast Cancer Awareness Month
DESCRIPTION:This October\, we’re proving that Breast Cancer Isn’t Just Pink \n\n\n\nEach year in Ireland\, 3\,704 people are diagnosed with breast cancer. That’s 3\,704 unique journeys\, thousands of treatment appointments\, countless conversations\, emotions and experiences and even more colours. Every. Single Year. So how could breast cancer be Just Pink? \n\n\n\nThis October\, we are continuing a conversation we started last year\, opening up Breast Cancer Awareness Month to be inclusive of all experiences and diagnosis\, highlighting that it is ok to have good days and bad days\, that no journey is the same and therefore  breast cancer can’t be just one colour.  Like every breast cancer journey\, each breast cancer survivor is unique\, and so\, with the help of our sponsor Roche Products Ireland and partner Fleetwood Paints\, we worked with a select group of women to show how a colour can articulate and represent  the deeply personal\, and unique  experience of being  diagnosed with breast cancer.

SUMMARY:Liver Cancer Awareness Month
DESCRIPTION:Following their mother Marie’s death from breast cancer in 1998\, the Keating family promised to provide the people of Ireland with vital information\, advice and support on the signs and symptoms of cancer and help to prevent cancer or detect it at its earliest stages. The Marie Keating Foundation was established in her memory and with this central ambition in mind. \n\n\n\nThe Foundation’s mission is to make cancer less frightening by enlightening and our aim is to live in a world free from the fear of cancer. \n\n\n\nToday\, the Marie Keating Foundation are one of the leading voices in Ireland for cancer prevention\, awareness and support. We are committed to being there for people diagnosed with cancer\, and their families at every step of this cancer journey\, and our services reflect that. Through our information and support services\,  we reach thousands of people a year\, giving education\, information and advice focused on cancer prevention and early detection\, as well as providing support services and financial assistance to those living with and beyond cancer. \n\n\n\nOur team of 21 and our Board works tirelessly to ensure that the mission and legacy that the Keating Family established 26 years ago is fulfilled\, and everyone in Ireland has access to trusted information on cancer prevention and early detection and that those on a cancer journey have the support they need to come through it. \n\n\n\nOur Core Values

SUMMARY:International Day of Older Persons
DESCRIPTION:On 14 December 1990\, the United Nations General Assembly designated October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons (resolution 45/106). This was preceded by initiatives such as the Vienna International Plan of Action on Ageing\, which was adopted by the 1982 World Assembly on Ageing and endorsed later that year by the UN General Assembly. \n\n\n\nIn 1991\, the General Assembly adopted the United Nations Principles for Older Persons (resolution 46/91). In 2002\, the Second World Assembly on Ageing adopted the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing\, to respond to the opportunities and challenges of population ageing in the 21st century and to promote the development of a society for all ages. \n\n\n\nThe number of older people (defined as those aged 65 years or older) tripled from around 260 million in 1980 to 761 million in 2021. Between 2021 and 2050\, the global share of the older population is projected to increase from less than 10% to around 17%. \n\n\n\nRapid growth in the number of people reaching older ages underscores the significance of promoting health\, preventing\, and treating illnesses throughout the entire course of life. \n\n\n\nIn societies with aging populations\, it becomes imperative to adjust to the increasing number of elderly individuals who possess a diverse range of functional capacities. The capability to carry out essential functions and partake in everyday activities is influenced not solely by an individual’s inherent capacity but also by the social and physical environments in which they reside. Supportive environments play a pivotal role in assisting older individuals to maintain their activity levels and independence as they progress in age. \n\n\n\nChange the Way You Think About Age!

SUMMARY:World Cancer Research Day
DESCRIPTION:Supporting cancer research awareness since 2016 \n\n\n\nCancer has a profound impact on millions of lives across the globe\, sparking widespread conversations about its challenges and implications. However\, one essential aspect often receives less attention: research. Scientific advancements in cancer research pave the way for new treatments\, improved patient outcomes\, and ultimately\, hope. This initiative established September 24th as a commemorative date to unite global efforts\, foster collaboration\, and accelerate progress in the fight against cancer.
