SUMMARY:Infant Mental Health Awareness Week
DESCRIPTION:Infant Mental Health Awareness Week 2026 — Attunement \n\n\n\nThis Infant Mental Health Awareness Week (8th–14th June 2026) will focus on the theme of ‘Attunement’. During the week we will highlight how attuned early relationships support babies’ development. \n\n\n\nAttunement is the ability to tune in and connect with others on an emotional level. It is important for everyone\, but particularly for babies and their parents or carers. \n\n\n\nThe Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood describes attunement in the following way: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEmotional attunement involves noticing\, understanding and responding to another person’s emotional state in a sensitive and appropriate way. When adults are emotionally attuned to babies and young children they notice cues\, validate children’s emotions and appropriately respond to them. \n\n\n\nAttunement helps babies to feel safe and loved. It helps babies learn to regulate their emotions\, supporting good infant mental health. \n\n\n\nIMHAW 2026 will explore how professionals and practitioners working with babies use the concept of attunement\, and what more we can do to support families. \n\n\n\nKeep an eye on this page and our other channels for further details. \n\n\n\nWhat is Infant Mental Health Awareness Week?\n\n\n\nInfant mental health is an often overlooked and misunderstood subject. Infant Mental Health Awareness Week provides an annual opportunity to discuss the importance of supporting babies’ mental health and wellbeing. \n\n\n\nThe Parent-Infant Foundation has set the theme and co-ordinated Infant Mental Health Awareness Week since 2017\, during which time it has grown into a global event. \n\n\n\nFor information on previous IMHAW activity\, see below.

SUMMARY:UN World Refugee Day
DESCRIPTION:Background \n\n\n\nWorld Refugee Day is an international day designated by the United Nations to honour refugees around the globe. It falls each year on June 20 and celebrates the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution. World Refugee Day is an occasion to build empathy and understanding for their plight and to recognize their resilience in rebuilding their lives. \n\n\n\nEvery minute 20 people leave everything behind to escape war\, persecution or terror. There are several types of forcibly displaced persons: \n\n\n\nRefugees\n\n\n\nA refugee is someone who fled his or her home and country owing to “a well-founded fear of persecution because of his/her race\, religion\, nationality\, membership in a particular social group\, or political opinion”\, according to the United Nations 1951 Refugee Convention. Many refugees are in exile to escape the effects of natural or human-made disasters.

SUMMARY:UN International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking
DESCRIPTION:By resolution 42/112 of 7 December 1987\, the General Assembly decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse. \n\n\n\nSupported each year by individuals\, communities\, and various organizations all over the world\, this global observance aims to raise awareness of the major problem that illicit drugs represent to society. \n\n\n\nThe evidence is clear: invest in prevention\n\n\n\nThe global drug problem presents a multifaceted challenge that touches the lives of millions worldwide. From individuals struggling with substance use disorders to communities grappling with the consequences of drug trafficking and organized crime\, the impact of drugs is far-reaching and complex. Central to addressing this challenge is the imperative to adopt a scientific evidence-based approach that prioritizes prevention and treatment. \n\n\n\nThe International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking\, or World Drug Day\, is marked on 26 June every year to strengthen action and cooperation in achieving a world free of drug abuse. This year’s World Drug Day calls for investment in prevention\, including justice\, education\, health care and alternative livelihoods — the building blocks of sustainable resilience. \n\n\n\nThis year’s campaign “Break the cycle. #StopOrganizedCrime” highlights the need for coordinated long-term action to break the cycle of organized crime and drug trafficking – by addressing root causes\, investing in prevention and building stronger health\, education and social systems. \n\n\n\n#WorldDrugDay #InvestInPrevention #StopOrganizedCrime

SUMMARY:UN World Population Day
DESCRIPTION:Empowering Youth to Build the Families They Want \n\n\n\nGlobal fertility rates are falling\, prompting warnings about “population collapse.” But the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)’s State of World Population report shows the real issue is a lack of reproductive agency—many people\, especially youth\, are unable to have the children they want. \n\n\n\nWorld Population Day highlights this challenge\, focusing on the largest-ever generation of young people. The theme\, “Empowering young people to create the families they want in a fair and hopeful world\,” calls for ensuring youth have the rights\, tools\, and opportunities to shape their futures. \n\n\n\nYoung people are already driving change\, but face major obstacles: economic insecurity\, gender inequality\, limited healthcare and education\, climate disruption\, and conflict. A UNFPA–YouGov survey of over 14\,000 people in 14 countries found most wanted more children but were prevented by social\, economic\, or health barriers. \n\n\n\nTo respond to global population trends effectively\, leaders must prioritize young people’s needs and voices. They need more than services—they need hope\, stability\, and a future worth planning for. As one youth activist told UNFPA\, “Young people are not just thinking about their future children—they are thinking about the world those children will inherit.” Supporting their rights is key to sustainable development\, peace\, and human dignity.

SUMMARY:World Hepatitis Day
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, more than a million people lose their lives to hepatitis – and the number of deaths is rising. But why? \n\n\n\nWe have fast and accurate tests\, effective and affordable treatments\, and a proven vaccine that could prevent 95% of newborns from getting hepatitis B. \n\n\n\nLow awareness\, misinformation\, myths and stigma are stopping people from accessing hepatitis services and leading to a lack of action by decision makers. \n\n\n\nLet’s break it down.\n\n\n\nThis World Hepatitis Day\, let’s break down the barriers holding us back from a hepatitis-free world. The World Hepatitis Alliance\, our partners\, allies\, and our 400 members in 120 countries are calling for action to end this entirely preventable disease. \n\n\n\nOur goals: \n\n\n\nThat everyone sees that hepatitis elimination is not only possible but achievable – if we all work together to make it happen. \n\n\n\nThat everyone has the knowledge and understanding they need to make informed choices about hepatitis testing\, treatment and vaccination. \n\n\n\nFor decision makers to become advocates\, providing the resources needed to improve the lives of affected communities. \n\n\n\nAn end to the stigma for people living with hepatitis\, ensuring no one is left behind.

SUMMARY:World Breastfeeding Week
DESCRIPTION:The theme for World Breastfeeding Week 2026 (August 1-7) is “Prioritise Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems”. Coordinated by WABA\, this theme emphasizes building long-term\, lasting support for families across workplaces\, communities\, and healthcare systems to improve breastfeeding rates and normalize nursing.  \n\n\n\nKey Focus Areas for 2026: \n\n\n\nHealth and Equity: Highlighting breastfeeding as a human right that reduces poverty and supports the health of mothers and babies. \n\n\n\nSustainable Support: Focusing on lasting infrastructure\, such as workplace lactation rooms and community support groups\, rather than just short-term awareness. \n\n\n\nActionable Goals: Encouraging policymakers\, employers\, and health systems to prioritize breastfeeding-friendly environments.

SUMMARY:International Youth Day
DESCRIPTION:Youth Localizing the SDGs \n\n\n\nThe theme of International Youth Day (IYD) 2025\, Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond\, highlights the unique role of youth in translating global ambitions into community-driven realities. As development partners work to translate and implement the global goals within specific local contexts\, aligning them with community needs while maintaining consistency with national and international commitments\, young people are critical partners. They bring creativity\, insight\, and deep community ties that help bridge the gap between policy and practice. With over 65 per cent of SDG targets linked to local governance\, youth engagement is not a luxury—it is a necessity. \n\n\n\nThis year’s IYD will also underscore the essential role of local and regional governments. Being the closest to the communities they serve\, they are uniquely positioned to create inclusive policy environments\, allocate resources\, and establish mechanisms for youth participation in local planning and decision-making. By integrating youth priorities into local and regional strategies and fostering partnerships with youth organizations\, authorities can collaborate with young people to transform their ideas into impactful solutions. When local governments provide spaces for innovation\, mentorship\, and civic engagement\, they not only accelerate SDG implementation but also nurture future community leaders and changemakers. \n\n\n\nThis year’s IYD takes on added significance as it coincides with the upcoming 30th anniversary of the World Programme of Action for Youth. It remains a guiding framework for recognizing youth as key actors in sustainable development and participatory governance—principles directly echoed in this year’s theme. Discussions related to the 2025 IYD theme will also inform preparations for the Second World Summit for Social Development to be held in Doha in November. \n\n\n\nAs the world embarks on the final stretch toward 2030\, IYD 2025 calls for real investments in inclusive policies and programmes that leverage local youth actions for the SDGs.

SUMMARY:World Humanitarian Day UN
DESCRIPTION:A Call to #ActForHumanity \n\n\n\nOn 19 August\, we mark World Humanitarian Day — a time to honor those who step into crises to help others\, and to stand with the millions of people whose lives hang in the balance. \n\n\n\nThis year the message is clear: the humanitarian system is stretched to its limits; underfunded\, overwhelmed and under attack. \n\n\n\nWhere bombs fall and disasters strike\, humanitarian workers are the ones holding the line keeping people alive\, often at great personal risk. But more and more those who help are becoming targets themselves. \n\n\n\nIn 2024 alone over 380 humanitarian workers were killed. Some in the line of duty\, others in their homes. Hundreds more have been injured\, kidnapped or detained\, and there is reason to fear 2025 could be worse. \n\n\n\nToo often the world looks away\, even when these attacks violate international law. The laws meant to protect aid workers are ignored. Those responsible walk free. This silence and lack of accountability cannot continue. \n\n\n\nThe system is failing not just humanitarian workers\, but the people they serve. We’re not at a crossroads anymore. We’re standing at the edge. Needs are rising. Funding is falling. Attacks on aid workers are breaking records.

SUMMARY:Green Ribbon Campaign
DESCRIPTION:Green Ribbon Campaign \n\n\n\nShine manages the national stigma-reduction programme for Ireland.  An important part of this work is our annual Green Ribbon Campaign\, which is now in its 16th year. \n\n\n\nWe know that mental health stigma remains a significant barrier to treatment and recovery for individuals and their families with mental illness.  Stigma leads to discrimination\, social exclusion\, and a lack of support\, exacerbating mental health problems and increasing the risk of loss to suicide.

SUMMARY:World Suicide Prevention Day
DESCRIPTION:World Suicide Prevention Day\, marked annually on 10 September\, is organized by the International Association for Suicide Prevention\, in conjunction with the World Health Organization (WHO). \n\n\n\nThe theme for 2024 – 2026 ‘Changing the Narrative on Suicide’ is about moving from a culture of silence and shame to understanding and support. It encourages people\, communities\, institutions and governments—all of us—to have open and honest discussions about suicide and suicidal behaviour. \n\n\n\nWith an estimated 208 000 lives lost every year\, suicide is a major issue in our South-East Asia Region. It remains one of the leading causes of death\, affecting people of all ages\, genders\, and backgrounds. \n\n\n\nBy breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and suicide\, we create a culture where people feel safe to seek help. It is vital to ensure that no one feels alone\, and that everyone knows support systems and interventions are available. \n\n\n\nSuicides are preventable — but prevention is not easy. It requires collective effort\, awareness\, and a commitment to fostering hope\, healing\, and connection. More than responding to individual crises\, it is about building strong and inclusive communities where people feel connected\, valued\, and supported. Even small acts of kindness\, honest conversations\, or simply being present for someone can make a profound difference. \n\n\n\nThe WHO South-East Asia Regional Office has been providing technical support to Member States to implement the LIVE LIFE initiative\, a package of evidence-based interventions for suicide prevention and underlying cross-cutting pillars. \n\n\n\nThe LIVE LIFE implementation guide provides technical guidance for the delivery of four key multisectoral interventions\, and six foundational pillars. \n\n\n\nThe four interventions are: \n\n\n\n1. Limiting access to the means of suicide2. Interacting with media for responsible reporting of suicide3. Fostering socio-emotional life-skills in young people4. Early identification and support to everyone affected by suicide and self-harm \n\n\n\nThe implementation of these is supported by six foundational pillars: \n\n\n\n1. Situation analysis2. Multisectoral collaboration3. Awareness raising and advocacy4. Capacity building5. Financing6. Surveillance\, monitoring and evaluation \n\n\n\nThe interventions can be integrated into health\, community and other settings\, and are a starting point to building a multi-level\, multi-sectoral approach to suicide prevention. \n\n\n\nAs we reflect on these strategies\, let us remember suicide prevention starts with us. It is our words\, our compassion and our patient listening that can save lives. \n\n\n\nOn World Suicide Prevention Day 2025\, let us start the conversation. Talk openly about suicide and suicide prevention\, show compassion\, offer support\, and listen without judgment. \n\n\n\nChange the narrative. Suicide is not inevitable\, it is preventable—and must be prevented. \n\n\n\nBy Dr Catharina Boehme\, Officer-in-Charge\, WHO South-East Asia

SUMMARY:World Sepsis Day
DESCRIPTION:World Sepsis Day is held globally on September 13th every year to raise awareness about the condition and promote preventative measures. Sepsis is the body’s extreme\, life-threatening response to an infection\, often referred to as the number one preventable cause of death globally\, claiming at least 11 million lives annually. \n\n\n\nBecause sepsis is poorly understood by the general public\, this annual campaign focuses on educating people about early recognition and clean care\, which can reduce mortality rates by up to 50%. \n\n\n\nKey Sepsis Awareness Points \n\n\n\nUnderstanding the red flags is vital for early intervention. Early signs often include: \n\n\n\n\nSlurred speech or confusion\n\n\n\nExtreme shivering or severe muscle pain\n\n\n\nPassing no urine throughout the day\n\n\n\nSevere breathlessness\n\n\n\nIt feeling like “you are going to die”\n\n\n\nSkin that is mottled or discolored \n\n\n\n\nHow to Get Involved \n\n\n\nIndividuals\, healthcare workers\, and organizations participate by hosting local events\, sharing educational materials\, and raising funds. In Ireland\, the Health Service Executive (HSE) and various local charities routinely spearhead awareness campaigns in hospitals and community centers during September.
