SUMMARY:World Sepsis Day
DESCRIPTION:World Sepsis Day is held globally on September 13th every year to raise awareness about the condition and promote preventative measures. Sepsis is the body’s extreme\, life-threatening response to an infection\, often referred to as the number one preventable cause of death globally\, claiming at least 11 million lives annually. \n\n\n\nBecause sepsis is poorly understood by the general public\, this annual campaign focuses on educating people about early recognition and clean care\, which can reduce mortality rates by up to 50%. \n\n\n\nKey Sepsis Awareness Points \n\n\n\nUnderstanding the red flags is vital for early intervention. Early signs often include: \n\n\n\n\nSlurred speech or confusion\n\n\n\nExtreme shivering or severe muscle pain\n\n\n\nPassing no urine throughout the day\n\n\n\nSevere breathlessness\n\n\n\nIt feeling like “you are going to die”\n\n\n\nSkin that is mottled or discolored \n\n\n\n\nHow to Get Involved \n\n\n\nIndividuals\, healthcare workers\, and organizations participate by hosting local events\, sharing educational materials\, and raising funds. In Ireland\, the Health Service Executive (HSE) and various local charities routinely spearhead awareness campaigns in hospitals and community centers during September.

SUMMARY:World Lymphoma Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:Navigating Lymphoma and CLL Together\n\n\n\n15 September marks World Lymphoma Awareness Day (WLAD). In 2026\, the global lymphoma community will come together under a new theme: Navigating Lymphoma and CLL Together—a campaign that positions Lymphoma Coalition and its Members as trusted guides throughout the patient journey\, from diagnosis to survivorship. \n\n\n\nA diagnosis of lymphoma or CLL can be complex and uncertain. Patients and care partners must navigate not only the physical impact of the disease\, but also challenges related to diagnosis\, access to treatment\, and quality of life. \n\n\n\nThis year’s campaign shifts the focus toward empowerment through knowledge\, support\, and connection. Grounded in the latest findings from the Global Patient Survey\, WLAD 2026 will highlight key moments along the patient journey—from recognising early signs and symptoms\, to accessing appropriate care\, to managing life beyond treatment.

SUMMARY:World Patient Safety Day\, 17 September 2026: "Safe care for noncommunicable diseases"
DESCRIPTION:From the World Health Organisation: \n\n\n\nSafe care for life! \n\n\n\nWorld Patient Safety Day brings together governments\, partners and communities to focus attention on patient safety and accelerate action to reduce avoidable harm in health care. \n\n\n\nIn 2026\, the campaign focuses on safe care for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs)\, with the slogan “Safe care for life!”. People living with NCDs often require continuous care across multiple settings and over long periods\, creating multiple points where safety risks can arise — from prevention and diagnosis to treatment\, long-term management and self-care. These risks are also influenced by health system challenges and the broader determinants of health. \n\n\n\nImproving safety in NCD care requires addressing risks related to the complexity of care\, strengthening health systems through a primary health care approach and tackling wider determinants that can increase the risk of harm. The campaign also highlights the importance of engaging people with lived experience in the design and delivery of NCD services and in their own care. \n\n\n\nIn this regard\, WHO convened a working group discussion with lived experience and health workforce experts to support the development of the global communication campaign. 12 experts representing all WHO regions attended the consultation in early March\, 2026. Key insights included recognizing people living in NCDs as partners rather than patients\, and positioning safe care as relevant across everyday life\, not only within health care settings.

SUMMARY:Spiritual Care Week
DESCRIPTION:Spiritual Care Week/Pastoral Care Week is hosted by The COMISS Network: The Network on Ministry in Specialized Settings.  The first Pastoral Care Week was held in October 1985. Since then it has grown beyond national to international proportions. The celebration of Spiritual Care Week provides an opportunity for chaplains and pastoral care counselors\, educators and providers to share their story and to celebrate various ministries. More specifically\, the established objectives of the Spiritual Care Week Committee outline the scope of Spiritual Care Week observance:  \n\n\n\n\nTo celebrate the education for and practice of spiritual care through professional chaplaincy and pastoral counseling.\n\n\n\nTo interpret and promote pastoral care.\n\n\n\nTo honor and celebrate all practitioners of pastoral care.\n\n\n\nTo express appreciation to institutions and their staff who support pastoral care ministries.\n\n\n\nTo publicize the work of pastoral care organizations affiliated with COMISS.\n\n\n\nTo promote continuing education for clergy\, laity\, and institutional employees regarding the value of pastoral care. \n\n\n\n\nEach year a new theme brings to the light a certain aspect of spiritual care as a focus. A new theme invites us to new and creative ways to tell the story of spiritual care.
