SUMMARY:World Humanitarian Day
DESCRIPTION:On 19 August 2003\, a bomb attack on the Canal Hotel in Baghdad\, Iraq\, killed 22 humanitarian aid workers\, including the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq\, Sergio Vieira de Mello. Five years later\, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution designating 19 August as World Humanitarian Day (WHD). \n\n\n\nEach year\, WHD focuses on a theme\, bringing together partners from across the humanitarian system to advocate for the survival\, well-being and dignity of people affected by crises\, and for the safety and security of aid workers. \n\n\n\nWHD is a campaign by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

SUMMARY:International Youth Day
DESCRIPTION:Young people are leading the charge in digital adoption and innovation\, with three-quarters of those aged 15 to 24 using the internet in 2022\, a rate higher than other age groups. However\, disparities persist\, particularly in low-income countries and among young women\, who often have less access to the internet and digital skills compared to their male counterparts. While there is an urgent need to enhance digital inclusion\, youth are largely recognized as “digital natives\,” using technology to drive change and create solutions. As the 2030 deadline for the SDGs approaches\, the role of young people in digital innovation is essential for addressing global issues. \n\n\n\nBy celebrating the digital contributions of youth\, we can inspire further innovation and collaboration towards achieving sustainable development.

SUMMARY:International Day of Friendship
DESCRIPTION:Sharing the human spirit through friendship \n\n\n\nOur world faces many challenges\, crises and forces of division — such as poverty\, violence\, and human rights abuses — among many others — that undermine peace\, security\, development and social harmony among the world’s peoples. \n\n\n\nTo confront those crises and challenges\, their root causes must be addressed by promoting and defending a shared spirit of human solidarity that takes many forms — the simplest of which is friendship. \n\n\n\nThrough friendship — by accumulating bonds of camaraderie and developing strong ties of trust — we can contribute to the fundamental shifts that are urgently needed to achieve lasting stability\, weave a safety net that will protect us all\, and generate passion for a better world where all are united for the greater good.

SUMMARY:International Human Rights Day
DESCRIPTION:Human Rights Day is observed annually around the world on 10 December. It commemorates the anniversary of one of the world’s most groundbreaking global pledges: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This landmark document enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being – regardless of race\, colour\, religion\, sex\, language\, political or other opinion\, national or social origin\, property\, birth or other status. \n\n\n\nThe Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 and sets out\, for the first time\, fundamental human rights to be universally protected.   \n\n\n\nAs a “common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations”\, the UDHR is a global blueprint for international\, national\, and local laws and policies and a bedrock of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development. \n\n\n\nIt is available in 577 languages\, from Abkhaz to Zulu\, making the UDHR the most translated document in the world.

SUMMARY:UN World Population Day
DESCRIPTION:To Leave No One Behind\, Count Everyone \n\n\n\nOver the past three decades\, societies around the world have made remarkable progress in improving population data gathering\, analysis\, and use. New population figures\, disaggregated by age\, ethnicity\, gender\, and other factors\, now reflect the diversity of our societies more accurately. \n\n\n\nThese advancements have significantly enhanced the delivery of health care globally\, leading to substantial improvements in sexual and reproductive health and the ability to exercise rights and choices. Increasingly\, new technologies are enabling more detailed and timely measurement of people’s experiences than ever before. \n\n\n\nHowever\, the most marginalized communities remain underrepresented in data\, profoundly affecting their lives and well-being. \n\n\n\nWorld Population Day 2024 is a moment to ask who is still going uncounted and why – and what this costs individuals\, societies\, and our global efforts to leave no one behind. It is also a moment for all of us to commit to doing more to ensure that our data systems capture the full range of human diversity so that everyone is seen\, can exercise their human rights and can reach their full potential.  \n\n\n\nTo realize the rights and choices of those on the margins of our societies\, we must count them – because everyone counts. Our rich human tapestry is only as strong as its weakest thread. When data and other systems work for those on the margins\, they work for everyone. This is how we accelerate progress for all.

SUMMARY:World Hepatitis Day
DESCRIPTION:World Hepatitis Day\, 28 July\, is an opportunity to step up national and international efforts on hepatitis\, encourage actions and engagement by individuals\, partners and the public and highlight the need for a greater global response as outlined in the WHO’s Global hepatitis report of 2017. \n\n\n\nThe date of 28 July was chosen because it is the birthday of Nobel-prize winning scientist Dr Baruch Blumberg\, who discovered hepatitis B virus (HBV) and developed a diagnostic test and vaccine for the virus. Low coverage of testing and treatment is the most important gap to be addressed in order to achieve the global elimination goals by 2030.

SUMMARY:National Volunteering Week
DESCRIPTION:National Volunteering Week is a weeklong celebration of volunteering. Along with the network of Volunteer Centres\, Volunteer Ireland uses National Volunteering Week to amplify the incredible stories of volunteering in our communities through social and traditional media. It’s a week full of events\, both online and in person\, with everything from yoga to coffee mornings to seminars on offer. \n\n\n\n#NVWIreland#BuildingCommunityTogether\n\n\n\nThis year’s National Volunteering Week theme is ‘Building Community Together’. This theme gives us a chance to feature the social opportunity that volunteering offers. Outside of home and work\, volunteering is the ‘third space’ for many people where they connect\, empathise\, laugh and nurture.   \n\n\n\nWe all know the impact of volunteering in our communities as volunteers provide care\, comfort and joy for people. However\, for so many volunteers\, the service to others is merely an added bonus! Volunteering is a way of socialising\, making friends\, and learning about others. Volunteering keeps people connected to their communities and gives them an outlet for the deep care they have for others.

SUMMARY:International Day Against Homophobia\, Biphobia and Transphobia
DESCRIPTION:The world is seeing hard-won progress in protecting the rights of lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender\, queer\, intersex and asexual people – but there is still a long road ahead. \n\n\n\nTo spotlight the advances and challenges\, the theme of the International Day Against Homophobia\, Transphobia and Biphobia this year is: “No one left behind: Equality\, freedom and justice for all.” \n\n\n\nAmong the recent advances: Social and legal norms have shifted away from criminalizing LGBTQIA+ people and towards safeguarding their rights. Since 2019\, 11 countries have legalized marriage equality. Since 2017\, 13 countries have removed laws criminalizing LGBTQIA+ sexuality.  \n\n\n\nFurther\, policies protecting the rights of sexual and gender minorities are gaining ground at every level. In recent months\, United Nations bodies have called for transgender-friendly HIV care\, protection of the rights of intersex people and an end to discrimination against LGBTQIA+ people in health services.  \n\n\n\nThese shifts have empowered LGBTQIA+ people and spurred health systems to improve access to sensitive and stigma-free care.  \n\n\n\nYet despite the progress\, discrimination and stigma remain\, leading to serious health disparities and other inequities. Dozens of countries still criminalize consensual same-sex relationships. In some places\, LGBTQIA+ people could face the death penalty because of their identity\, leaving them highly vulnerable to rights violations and with limited access to health services. And many political leaders are using polarizing policies and harmful rhetoric. \n\n\n\nAll of this leaves LGBTQIA+ people more likely to be forced to confront poverty\, violence and other forms of marginalization. In times of humanitarian emergencies\, such as climate crises\, the inequities deepen. The consequences can be life threatening\, leading to struggles to obtain shelter and disaster relief due to discrimination and neglect. \n\n\n\nIn honor of the international day\, UNFPA is calling for the integration of LGBTQI+ rights and sexual and reproductive health and rights in global humanitarian and climate-resilience policies. \n\n\n\nUNFPA stands for the rights and choices of everyone\, everywhere. “LGBTQIA+ people deserve full enjoyment of their equal rights just like all others\,” UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem says. “Yet despite progress in many parts of the world\, they often still suffer from severe discrimination and stigma. This is wrong. During conflicts and crises\, their rights may be overlooked and their unique needs for protection and health care can go unmet. To truly leave no one behind means safeguarding the rights of LGBTQIA+ people in all settings and including them fully in humanitarian preparedness\, response\, relief and recovery efforts.”
