SUMMARY:World No Tobacco Day
DESCRIPTION:This yearly celebration informs the public on the dangers of using tobacco\, the business practices of tobacco companies\, what WHO is doing to fight the tobacco epidemic\, and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living and to protect future generations. \n\n\n\nThe Member States of the World Health Organization created World No Tobacco Day in 1987 to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and the preventable death and disease it causes. In 1987\, the World Health Assembly passed Resolution WHA40.38\, calling for 7 April 1988 to be a “a world no-smoking day.” In 1988\, Resolution WHA42.19 was passed\, calling for the celebration of World No Tobacco Day\, every year on 31 May.

SUMMARY:National Volunteering Week
DESCRIPTION:National Volunteering Week is a weeklong celebration of volunteering. Along with the network of Volunteer Centres\, Volunteer Ireland uses National Volunteering Week to amplify the incredible stories of volunteering in our communities through social and traditional media. It’s a week full of events\, both online and in person\, with everything from yoga to coffee mornings to seminars on offer. \n\n\n\n#NVWIreland#BuildingCommunityTogether\n\n\n\nThis year’s National Volunteering Week theme is ‘Building Community Together’. This theme gives us a chance to feature the social opportunity that volunteering offers. Outside of home and work\, volunteering is the ‘third space’ for many people where they connect\, empathise\, laugh and nurture.   \n\n\n\nWe all know the impact of volunteering in our communities as volunteers provide care\, comfort and joy for people. However\, for so many volunteers\, the service to others is merely an added bonus! Volunteering is a way of socialising\, making friends\, and learning about others. Volunteering keeps people connected to their communities and gives them an outlet for the deep care they have for others.

SUMMARY:International Day Against Homophobia\, Biphobia and Transphobia
DESCRIPTION:The world is seeing hard-won progress in protecting the rights of lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender\, queer\, intersex and asexual people – but there is still a long road ahead. \n\n\n\nTo spotlight the advances and challenges\, the theme of the International Day Against Homophobia\, Transphobia and Biphobia this year is: “No one left behind: Equality\, freedom and justice for all.” \n\n\n\nAmong the recent advances: Social and legal norms have shifted away from criminalizing LGBTQIA+ people and towards safeguarding their rights. Since 2019\, 11 countries have legalized marriage equality. Since 2017\, 13 countries have removed laws criminalizing LGBTQIA+ sexuality.  \n\n\n\nFurther\, policies protecting the rights of sexual and gender minorities are gaining ground at every level. In recent months\, United Nations bodies have called for transgender-friendly HIV care\, protection of the rights of intersex people and an end to discrimination against LGBTQIA+ people in health services.  \n\n\n\nThese shifts have empowered LGBTQIA+ people and spurred health systems to improve access to sensitive and stigma-free care.  \n\n\n\nYet despite the progress\, discrimination and stigma remain\, leading to serious health disparities and other inequities. Dozens of countries still criminalize consensual same-sex relationships. In some places\, LGBTQIA+ people could face the death penalty because of their identity\, leaving them highly vulnerable to rights violations and with limited access to health services. And many political leaders are using polarizing policies and harmful rhetoric. \n\n\n\nAll of this leaves LGBTQIA+ people more likely to be forced to confront poverty\, violence and other forms of marginalization. In times of humanitarian emergencies\, such as climate crises\, the inequities deepen. The consequences can be life threatening\, leading to struggles to obtain shelter and disaster relief due to discrimination and neglect. \n\n\n\nIn honor of the international day\, UNFPA is calling for the integration of LGBTQI+ rights and sexual and reproductive health and rights in global humanitarian and climate-resilience policies. \n\n\n\nUNFPA stands for the rights and choices of everyone\, everywhere. “LGBTQIA+ people deserve full enjoyment of their equal rights just like all others\,” UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem says. “Yet despite progress in many parts of the world\, they often still suffer from severe discrimination and stigma. This is wrong. During conflicts and crises\, their rights may be overlooked and their unique needs for protection and health care can go unmet. To truly leave no one behind means safeguarding the rights of LGBTQIA+ people in all settings and including them fully in humanitarian preparedness\, response\, relief and recovery efforts.”

SUMMARY:World Asthma Day
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of World Asthma Day 2025\, the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) has chosen the theme “Make Inhaled Treatments Accessible for ALL”. GINA emphasizes the need to ensure that people with asthma can access inhaled medications that are essential both for controlling the underlying disease and treating attacks. \n\n\n\nAsthma attacks cause great distress for sufferers and their careers\, and these attacks may result in hospital admission and\, in some cases\, death. Inhaled corticosteroid-containing medications prevent asthma attacks by treating the underlying inflammation that causes asthma. \n\n\n\nDoctors and allied health care professionals are called upon to ensure that every person with asthma is prescribed evidence-based\, essential\, inhaled corticosteroid-containing medication in addition to (or in combination with) reliever medication\, to prevent the continuing avoidable morbidity and mortality from asthma. \n\n\n\nAsthma is one of the most common chronic non-communicable diseases that affects over 260 million people and is responsible for over 450\,000 deaths each year worldwide. Most of these deaths are preventable. \n\n\n\nIn low-middle-income countries\, lack of availability or high cost of inhaled medicines\, especially inhaled corticosteroid-containing inhalers\, are major contributors to the fact that 96% of global asthma deaths occur in these countries. \n\n\n\nEven in high income countries\, high costs can mean that many people with asthma have limited access to essential inhaled medicines\, resulting in poorly controlled asthma and preventable asthma deaths. \n\n\n\nPolicy makers\, governments\, payers\, and pharmaceutical industry manufacturers and suppliers are called upon to increase their awareness of the continuing preventable morbidity and mortality associated with asthma in spite of the existence of evidence based\, highly effective management of asthma. \n\n\n\nWe call on everyone to increase their efforts to “Make Inhaled Treatments Accessible for ALL”\, in all countries throughout the world. See www.ginasthma.org/reports.

SUMMARY:World Hand Hygiene Day
DESCRIPTION:Each year the SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands campaign aims to progress the goal of maintaining a global profile on the importance of hand hygiene in health care and to ‘bring people together’ in support of hand hygiene improvement globally. \n\n\n\nWHO calls on everyone to be inspired by the global movement to achieve universal health coverage (UHC)\, i.e. achieving better health and well-being for all people at all ages\, including financial risk protection\, access to quality essential health care services and access to safe\, effective\, quality and affordable essential medicines and vaccines for all. Infection Prevention and Control\, including hand hygiene\, is critical to achieve UHC as it is a practical and evidence-based approach with demonstrated impact on quality of care and patient safety across all levels of the health system. \n\n\n\nBackground \n\n\n\nAs part of a major global effort to improve hand hygiene in health care\, led by WHO to support health-care workers\, the SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands annual global campaign was launched in 2009 and was a natural extension of the WHO First Global Patient Safety Challenge: Clean Care is Safer Care work which is now  WHO IPC Hub & Task Force. \n\n\n\nThe central core of SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands is that all health-care workers should clean their hands at the right time and in the right way. \n\n\n\nWHO SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands annual initiative is part of a major global effort led by the WHO to support health-care workers to improve hand hygiene in health care and thus support the prevention of often life threatening HAI. \n\n\n\nSAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands incorporates a global annual day to focus on the importance of improving hand hygiene in health care with WHO providing support for these efforts. A suite of hand hygiene improvement tools and materials have been created from a base of existing research and evidence and from rigorous testing\, as well as working closely with a range of experts in the field. The tools aim to help the translation into practice of a multimodal strategy for improving and sustaining hand hygiene in health care.

SUMMARY:Bealtaine Festival
DESCRIPTION:Bealtaine is Ireland’s national festival which celebrates the arts and creativity as we age. The festival is run by Age & Opportunity\, the leading national development organisation working to enable the best possible quality of life for us all as we age. \n\n\n\nAge & Opportunity Arts provides opportunities for older people to be more creative more often\, to create meaningful participation and representation for all older people in cultural and creative life and to demonstrate and celebrate how our creative potential can improve with age. \n\n\n\nBealtaine takes place each May for the entire month.  The ancient festival of Bealtaine or Beltane (held on May 1)\, marked the midway point between the spring equinox and the summer solstice\, and heralded the start of summer. The word Bealtaine is still used in the Irish language and translates as the month of May. \n\n\n\nThe Festival brings together people from all over Ireland to foster and inspire creativity among older people and to promote the skills\, experiences and exposure that can lead to a rich creative life for all older people.

SUMMARY:SunSmart Campaign
DESCRIPTION:In Ireland the sun can damage your skin\, even on cloudy days. Skin damage does not only happen in hot\, sunny places. \n\n\n\nUltraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and sunbeds can damage skin and increase your risk of skin cancers including: \n\n\n\n\nmelanoma\n\n\n\nnon-melanoma skin cancer\n\n\n\n\nThis is because most skin cancers are caused by UV light damaging the DNA in skin cells. UVA and UVB are types of UV light. They damage skin over time\, making it more likely for skin cancers to develop.

SUMMARY:World Heart Day
DESCRIPTION:World Heart Day is a global event to raise awareness and educate people about cardiovascular disease (CVD) and ways to help keep our hearts healthy. Created by the World Heart Foundation\, World Heart Day is designed to help encourage people to take care of their heart health and control risk factors that may contribute to CVD both for themselves\, and for others. World Heart Day happens every year on 29th September. \n\n\n\nWhat is cardiovascular disease (CVD)? \n\n\n\nCVD refers to the disease of the heart\, blood vessels or vascular disease of the brain. This includes heart attacks and strokes. CVD is the number one cause of death in the world. CVD can be genetic\, but there are certain risk factors that can be controlled to help prevent us from suffering from CVD. \n\n\n\nWhat causes cardiovascular disease? \n\n\n\nThere are a variety of factors that can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Some of these\, like genetic predisposition\, cannot be modified\, but there are some things we can do to help reduce the risk of CVD. Here are some of the causes: \n\n\n\n\nPhysical factors – smoking\, an unhealthy diet\, stress and a lack of exercise can all contribute to CVD – trying to control these and monitoring blood pressure regularly can help to reduce the risk\n\n\n\nHeart conditions\, hypertension and high cholesterol\n\n\n\nGenetic predisposition through family history or existing conditions\, such as diabetes\n\n\n\nAge – as you get older your risk of CVD increases\, so it is even more important to look after your health\n\n\n\n\nHow to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease \n\n\n\nThere are a number of ways to help reduce some of these risk factors: \n\n\n\n\nReduce sugar intake\n\n\n\nMake sure you get your 5 a day\n\n\n\nReduce salt and fat intake\n\n\n\nTry and get 30 minutes of exercise\, five times a week\n\n\n\n\nWhat happens on World Heart Day? \n\n\n\nThere are a number of different activities that take place on World Heart Day. Some of these include: \n\n\n\n\nAwareness and education – this includes talks\, social events for sufferers of CVD and more\n\n\n\nAccess to health screenings\n\n\n\nSports activities\n\n\n\nExhibitions\n\n\n\nFundraising events\n\n\n\n\nFun facts about the heart \n\n\n\n\nThe heart is about the size of an adult fist\n\n\n\nIt is the strongest muscle in the body\n\n\n\nIt takes approximately 45 seconds for the heart to circulate blood all around the body\n\n\n\nThe sound of your heartbeat is made by the 4 valves of the heart opening and closing as your blood flows\n\n\n\nYour heart beats about 100\,000 times a day\n\n\n\n\nWorld Heart Day in the classroom \n\n\n\nTeach students all about the heart with this fabulous display poster. SUMMARY:World Alzheimer's Day
DESCRIPTION:World Alzheimer’s Month \n\n\n\nWorld Alzheimer’s Month is the international campaign from Alzheimer’s Disease International that takes place every September. \n\n\n\nEach September\, people unite from all corners of the world to raise awareness and to challenge the stigma that persists around Alzheimer’s disease and all types of dementia.\n\n\n\nDuring World Alzheimer’s Month\, we call on everyone\, from individuals to large organisations\, including every Alzheimer and dementia association globally\, to support World Alzheimer’s Month by getting involved.     In 2024 we are once again shining a light on attitudes to dementia around the world. The 2024 campaign and World Alzheimer Report\, which will be launched on the eve of World Alzheimer’s Day\, 20 September\, will again challenge why so many people still wrongly believe that dementia is a part of normal ageing. This reason alone highlights how important public awareness campaigns\, like World Alzheimer’s Month\, are for changing perceptions and increasing existing public knowledge around Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.   \n\n\n\nThe 2024 World Alzheimer’s Month campaign will centre around the taglines ‘Time to act on dementia\, Time to act on Alzheimer’s’. The global awareness raising campaign focusses on attitudes toward dementia and seeks to redress stigma and discrimination which still exists around the condition\, while highlighting the positive steps being undertaken by organisations and governments globally to develop a more dementia friendly society. \n\n\n\n\nAlzheimer Ireland website\n\n\n\nAlzheimers Disease International website
