SUMMARY:World Alzheimer's Day
DESCRIPTION:World Alzheimer’s Month \n\n\n\nWorld Alzheimer’s Month is the international campaign from Alzheimer’s Disease International that takes place every September. \n\n\n\nEach September\, people unite from all corners of the world to raise awareness and to challenge the stigma that persists around Alzheimer’s disease and all types of dementia.\n\n\n\nDuring World Alzheimer’s Month\, we call on everyone\, from individuals to large organisations\, including every Alzheimer and dementia association globally\, to support World Alzheimer’s Month by getting involved.     In 2024 we are once again shining a light on attitudes to dementia around the world. The 2024 campaign and World Alzheimer Report\, which will be launched on the eve of World Alzheimer’s Day\, 20 September\, will again challenge why so many people still wrongly believe that dementia is a part of normal ageing. This reason alone highlights how important public awareness campaigns\, like World Alzheimer’s Month\, are for changing perceptions and increasing existing public knowledge around Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.   \n\n\n\nThe 2024 World Alzheimer’s Month campaign will centre around the taglines ‘Time to act on dementia\, Time to act on Alzheimer’s’. The global awareness raising campaign focusses on attitudes toward dementia and seeks to redress stigma and discrimination which still exists around the condition\, while highlighting the positive steps being undertaken by organisations and governments globally to develop a more dementia friendly society. \n\n\n\n\nAlzheimer Ireland website\n\n\n\nAlzheimers Disease International website

SUMMARY:World Heart Day
DESCRIPTION:World Heart Day is a global event to raise awareness and educate people about cardiovascular disease (CVD) and ways to help keep our hearts healthy. Created by the World Heart Foundation\, World Heart Day is designed to help encourage people to take care of their heart health and control risk factors that may contribute to CVD both for themselves\, and for others. World Heart Day happens every year on 29th September. \n\n\n\nWhat is cardiovascular disease (CVD)? \n\n\n\nCVD refers to the disease of the heart\, blood vessels or vascular disease of the brain. CVD can be genetic\, but there are certain risk factors that can be controlled to help prevent us from suffering from CVD. \n\n\n\nWhat causes cardiovascular disease? \n\n\n\nThere are a variety of factors that can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Some of these\, like genetic predisposition\, cannot be modified\, but there are some things we can do to help reduce the risk of CVD. Here are some of the causes: \n\n\n\n\nPhysical factors – smoking\, an unhealthy diet\, stress and a lack of exercise can all contribute to CVD – trying to control these and monitoring blood pressure regularly can help to reduce the risk\n\n\n\nHeart conditions\, hypertension and high cholesterol\n\n\n\nGenetic predisposition through family history or existing conditions\, such as diabetes\n\n\n\nAge – as you get older your risk of CVD increases\, so it is even more important to look after your health\n\n\n\n\nHow to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease \n\n\n\nThere are a number of ways to help reduce some of these risk factors: \n\n\n\n\nReduce sugar intake\n\n\n\nMake sure you get your 5 a day\n\n\n\nReduce salt and fat intake\n\n\n\nTry and get 30 minutes of exercise\, five times a week\n\n\n\n\nWhat happens on World Heart Day? \n\n\n\nThere are a number of different activities that take place on World Heart Day. Some of these include: \n\n\n\n\nAwareness and education – this includes talks\, social events for sufferers of CVD and more\n\n\n\nAccess to health screenings\n\n\n\nSports activities\n\n\n\nExhibitions\n\n\n\nFundraising events\n\n\n\n\nFun facts about the heart \n\n\n\n\nThe heart is about the size of an adult fist\n\n\n\nIt is the strongest muscle in the body\n\n\n\nIt takes approximately 45 seconds for the heart to circulate blood all around the body\n\n\n\nThe sound of your heartbeat is made by the 4 valves of the heart opening and closing as your blood flows\n\n\n\nYour heart beats about 100\,000 times a day\n\n\n\n\nWorld Heart Day in the classroom \n\n\n\nTeach students all about the heart with this fabulous display poster.
