{"id":3443,"date":"2023-07-25T15:48:44","date_gmt":"2023-07-25T14:48:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/healthyworkplace.ie\/?post_type=resources&#038;p=3443"},"modified":"2024-01-09T08:06:56","modified_gmt":"2024-01-09T08:06:56","slug":"iarnrod-eireann-irish-rail","status":"publish","type":"resources","link":"https:\/\/healthyworkplace.ie\/ga\/resources\/iarnrod-eireann-irish-rail\/","title":{"rendered":"Iarnr\u00f3d \u00c9ireann\/Irish Rail"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-light-background-color has-background is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iarnr\u00f3d \u00c9ireann is a subsidiary company of CIE, the publicly owned transport company of Ireland.&nbsp; Our role is to provide rail transport services within the State of Ireland. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iarnr\u00f3d \u00c9ireann employs 4,300 people, 89% of the staff are male and the average age is 47+, Employees work across a wide variety of roles, including shift and night working \u2013 from engineering to train driving, frontline customer service, office, and remote working \u2013 They are a geographically distributed workforce across the national network. There are 144 stations and over 1 million passengers are carried weekly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Promoting Workplace Wellbeing &#8211; The Process<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iarnr\u00f3d \u00c9ireann\u2019s People Strategy sets the strategic people leadership direction to 2027, with four key strategic priorities which include being a leader in employee health and wellbeing. Our aim is to create a workplace environment where the health of employees, mentally and physically is embedded within the culture of the organisation enabling a thriving, engaged and productive workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"525\" src=\"https:\/\/healthyworkplace.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/WHOhealthy_workplace_framework.png\" alt=\"WHO Healthy Workplace Framework Venn diagram\" class=\"wp-image-3447\" srcset=\"https:\/\/healthyworkplace.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/WHOhealthy_workplace_framework.png 685w, https:\/\/healthyworkplace.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/WHOhealthy_workplace_framework-576x441.png 576w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 685px) 100vw, 685px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using the WHO framework for workplace health as our evidence-based roadmap, we steered our programs using this model. See diagram above for our key headings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A staff wellbeing survey in 2021 identified what was important to employees and the company actioned and responded to what their responses were.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We gained senior management commitment and employee engagement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Formation of a cross functional wellbeing steering group and committee group including union reps.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We recruited 50 wellbeing champions over the network. We provided support, training and also offered them personal Life\/Health coaching.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We developed a bespoke wellbeing programme called Ignition Go for staff based on initial research done from the Diabetes Department with transport workers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We developed an annual calendar of wellbeing events,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Challenges<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>4,300 staff spread across the country, over 145 locations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>89% of our staff were male and the average age is 47 years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Given our profile chronic disease prevalence is likely.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Very traditional culture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shift workers hard to reach group.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Comms challenge as not all our staff have emails.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Staff spread throughout the country \u2013 difficult to reach.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Access to healthy choices and culture of healthy foods was limited.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fatalities on the line \u2013 mental health consequences for staff.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Workload is demanding.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Low turnover, change can be a challenge.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Capacity for Health &amp; Wellbeing expertise is limited.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cost<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Agreed annual budget and external wellbeing sustainability funding sources obtained.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Outcomes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Culture of health and wellbeing being embedded in the organisation. Iarnr\u00f3d \u00c9ireann won the 2023 CIPD award for the large company category.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Staff are beginning to see workplace wellbeing as part of organisational culture of Iarnr\u00f3d \u00c9ireann.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reputation of the organisation as a positive working environment and an employer of choice is promoted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>46% of our staff identified as carers including our CEO. Iarnr\u00f3d \u00c9ireann became the first workplace to sign up with Family Carers Ireland for workplace.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New Occupational Health facility for staff<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wellhub-employee health and wellbeing platform<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Outcomes of the Ignition Go Wellbeing program<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An evaluated report by the Railway Safety Standards Board<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Interactive app \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Live webinars and in-person events<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Personal coaching<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>738 participants (nearly 20% of workforce),<\/strong> 470 of them have the app and are actively engaged with it.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To date 39 group calls completed. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>25 outside experts\u2019 webinars and the remainder done by Ignition Go.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>30 newsletters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Confidential personal Health coaching with over 100 people.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Last live event had 200 in attendance and 2,100 remote attendants.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A 6-week health champions programme that was attended by 21 champions.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3 in person events: approx. Over all 400 attendees in total, in person cookery demo, food tasting and staff panel, Wellbeing Conference on Heart &amp; Brain Health, and our latest one was called Conquering the challenges of modern life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Qualitative feedback from some of the Ignition Go focus groups:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cGreat for accountability, motivation &amp; increasing confidence\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cPositive weight loss, no focus on it but it just happened\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWellbeing champions really liked it and wanted to promote it\u201d<\/em><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Learnings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Using our well on track logo brand to help engage employees into wellbeing initiatives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow through on what staff asked for<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Align initiatives with organisational objectives and goals.
