June Focus:

Several awareness events taking place this month highlight the importance of relationships, community and support networks, both inside and outside the workplace. These include National Carers Week (8–14 June), Men’s Health Week (15–21 June), Cancer Survivors Day (7 June), and World Blood Donor Day (14 June).

Research consistently shows that people who feel connected at work report higher levels of wellbeing, engagement and job satisfaction. Yet many organisations continue to face challenges in creating opportunities for meaningful connection, particularly in hybrid and dispersed working environments.

Connection does not always require significant investment. Across the Healthy Workplace Programme, participating organisations have demonstrated how simple initiatives can have a positive impact. Examples include workplace walking groups, coffee mornings, peer support initiatives, lunch-and-learn sessions, team challenges, volunteering activities and employee-led wellbeing groups.

National Carers Week also provides an opportunity for organisations to recognise the many employees who balance work with caring responsibilities. Creating supportive workplace cultures where employees feel comfortable discussing their needs can make a significant difference to wellbeing and retention.

As workplaces continue their wellbeing journeys, June serves as a reminder that wellbeing is not only about individual health behaviours. It is also about fostering belonging, support and positive workplace relationships.

Questions for Reflection

  • How connected do employees feel to their colleagues and organisation?
  • Are there opportunities to strengthen social wellbeing within your workplace?
  • How are employees with caring responsibilities supported?
  • What small actions could help build a greater sense of community?

Sometimes the most impactful wellbeing initiatives are the simplest—creating opportunities for people to connect, share experiences and support one another.
