Gynaecologic Cancer Awareness Month

1 September 30 September

Gynaecologic Cancer Awareness Month is observed every September to raise awareness for cancers of the female reproductive system: cervical, ovarian, uterine/endometrial, vaginal, and vulvar. It is represented by a purple ribbon and focuses on early detection, symptom recognition, and supporting those affected.

Because symptoms can be subtle and are often missed, knowing your body and seeking medical advice quickly is critical.

Common Gynaecological Symptoms to Watch For

Be sure to contact your general practitioner if you experience any of the following:

  • Unusual Vaginal Bleeding: Bleeding between periods, after intercourse, or after menopause.
  • Persistent Pelvic Pain: Ongoing discomfort or pain in the lower abdomen or between the hip bones.
  • Bloating or Swelling: Persistent abdominal swelling or feeling full quickly (often associated with ovarian cancer).
  • Changes in Bladder or Bowel Habits: Needing to urinate more frequently, or sudden constipation/diarrhea.
  • Unusual Discharge: Vaginal discharge that is blood-tinged or has an unusual color or odor.
  • Post-Menopausal Changes: Any vaginal bleeding after menopause should always be evaluated.

Key Resources & Support in Ireland

If you are located in or near Dublin, there are excellent local resources and networks available for awareness, screening, and patient support:

Cancer Support: Reach out to the Irish Cancer Society for confidential advice, support, and to speak with specialist cancer nurses.

Screening: Check your eligibility for free cervical screening through the national program via HSE CervicalCheck.

Irish Network for Gynaecological Oncology (INGO): Follow campaigns like #NothingToHide and #DareToAsk, which are led by the Irish Network for Gynaecological Oncology to promote awareness events in Ireland.
